Starting the Change
Honestly, every time I came home and saw the mess everywhere, I just wanted to turn around and leave! I used to be completely clueless about organization, with my room always in chaos. Clothes thrown around carelessly, cosmetics scattered all over the desk, drawers stuffed with random items bought who knows when, and finding anything meant turning everything upside down. Those perfectly organized photos online always seemed so out of reach. Until six months ago, when I finally couldn't take the chaos anymore and decided to make a change.
Looking back, that decision was absolutely right! These six months of organizing practice not only transformed my living environment but, more importantly, greatly improved my mood and quality of life. Today, I want to share my experiences with you, hoping to help those who face similar struggles!
Organization Principles
The core principle of organization is giving every item a fixed "home." This sounds simple but isn't easy to do. For example, I used to just toss my keys into my bag, resulting in having to dig through my messy bag every time I went out. Now I've installed a simple key hook by the door - hanging up my keys is the first thing I do when I get home, and I can grab them instantly when leaving, no more frantic searching everywhere.
The same goes for phones and wallets. I put a simple organizer box on the entryway cabinet specifically for these everyday items. Gradually, this action became muscle memory, requiring no conscious thought. Every morning before leaving, one glance at the organizer box tells me if I have everything I need.
The hardest part of organization isn't making rules, but sticking to them. At first, I often forgot to put things back in their place, but I made myself a rule: if I notice something out of place, fix it immediately. Through constant reminding and correcting, good habits slowly formed.
Clothing Organization
Organizing clothes is definitely one of the most headache-inducing problems. My closet used to be a black hole, with clothes piled up in chaos when you opened the door. Now I've learned a super useful technique: organizing clothes by type and color.
First, there's the dirty laundry issue. I put two laundry baskets in the bathroom, one specifically for light-colored clothes and another for dark clothes. This way, there's no need to sort when doing laundry. I also labeled each basket so everyone in the house knows exactly where to put their clothes.
Closet organization is also crucial. I divided all clothes into four sections by season, with current season clothes in the most accessible spots and off-season clothes stored in high places or storage boxes. Every piece of clothing hangs on matching dust-proof hangers, which maintains the clothes' shape and keeps the whole closet looking neat and tidy.
For bedding organization, my secret is keeping all pieces of a bedding set together. For example, I fold the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases and store them inside one of the pillowcases. This keeps bedding neat and makes changing sheets easier since everything's in one place. I also label the outside of the pillowcase with the pattern inside, so I know which set is which at a glance.
Small clothing items are important too. I bought several drawer organizers to sort underwear, socks, and scarves by category. Each compartment has a specific purpose, so no more missing sock problems.
Cable Organization
Modern life comes with more and more electronic devices, and with them comes the headache of cable management. Chargers, data cables, headphone cords can easily become a tangled mess. My current method is using different colored hair clips to secure different types of cables, then labeling them. This makes it easy to identify each cable's purpose and keeps everything tidy.
For frequently used charging cables, I use butterfly clips to secure them to the edge of the desk, preventing them from falling behind. Another particularly useful trick is using toilet paper rolls to store cables. Neatly wrap unused cables and place them in toilet paper rolls, label their use on the outside - this prevents tangling and saves space.
Kitchen Tips
The kitchen might be the place that needs organization techniques the most. First is the issue of ingredient storage. I now cut fresh ginger into small pieces and freeze them in storage bags. This not only preserves them longer but makes them convenient to use - just take out what you need.
Herb storage is also challenging. Fresh herbs easily wilt in the refrigerator, but I discovered a great method: chop clean herbs, put them in ice cube trays, fill with olive oil, and freeze. This keeps herbs fresh, and when cooking, just throw a cube into the pan - when the olive oil melts, it adds flavor to the dish.
Spice organization is important too. I transferred all spices into matching glass jars, labeled them, and arranged them by frequency of use. Frequently used ones go in easily accessible spots, less used ones on upper shelves. This makes finding spices while cooking easy and looks organized too.
Kitchen utensil organization also matters. I organize utensils by type, like keeping all knives in a knife block and hanging frequently used tools like spatulas and strainers on wall hooks. This keeps the kitchen tidy and increases cooking efficiency.
Cleaning Tips
When it comes to cleaning, scratches and stains are the most troublesome. I discovered that walnut oil works great for concealing scratches on light-colored wooden furniture. The method is to use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of walnut oil to the scratch, then wipe it evenly with a soft cloth. This method works surprisingly well, especially for light-colored solid wood furniture.
For scratches on dark furniture, used coffee grounds can help. Dry used coffee grounds, then apply them to scratches with a cotton swab. The dark color of coffee grounds effectively conceals scratches while adding a protective layer to the furniture.
Cleaning supplies also require proper use. For example, don't throw away used soap pieces - they can be stuck to new soap bars to continue using. This maximizes the use of every soap bar and saves money. I also store cleaning supplies for different areas separately, like keeping kitchen cleaning supplies in kitchen cabinets and bathroom cleaning supplies in bathroom storage racks, making them convenient to use.
Life Management
Good life management can make our lives easier and more enjoyable. I now spend 10 minutes every night preparing for the next day, like organizing my bag, preparing tomorrow's clothes, and checking tomorrow's schedule. This prevents morning rushes.
Early rising is also an important habit. To ensure I wake up on time, I put my alarm clock far from the bed, forcing me to get up and walk over to turn it off. By the time I reach it, I'm usually awake. I set two alarms 5 minutes apart, so if I'm not fully awake after the first one, the second will wake me up.
Time management is crucial too. I use my phone's memo function to record daily tasks, categorizing them by importance and urgency. Important and urgent matters get priority, while important but non-urgent tasks can be scheduled appropriately, keeping things running smoothly.
Practical Suggestions
These organization and tidying techniques sound simple, but consistently maintaining them isn't easy. I suggest starting with your most troublesome issue - for example, if clothing organization bothers you most, start by organizing your closet.
During implementation, give yourself enough patience and time. Change doesn't happen overnight - it took me nearly half a year to truly establish these habits. There were many setbacks, sometimes lazily misplacing things, but as long as you catch and correct these slip-ups, you can get back on track.
Appropriate rewards are important when building new habits. Whenever I complete a milestone goal, like organizing the closet perfectly, I give myself small rewards to maintain motivation for continuing.
Reflections and Gains
Through these six months of practice, I deeply realize that good living habits can truly change one's quality of life. Now, returning to a tidy home and seeing everything neatly arranged improves my mood. Plus, with everything having a fixed place, finding things is convenient - no more wasting time searching.
Most importantly, these changes have made my life more orderly and efficient. No more rushing around looking for things in the morning, better focus at work, and truly relaxing at home in the evening. This change isn't just about the physical environment, but an elevation in lifestyle attitude.
Through this organization practice, I've also learned the wisdom of letting go. During organization, I regularly clear out unnecessary items, keeping only what's truly useful. This maintains home tidiness and simplifies life.
Life needs continuous change and improvement, and good organization habits are the first step to improving life quality. I hope sharing these experiences helps more people establish good organization habits and make life more beautiful.
